I was taught by everything I heard as a child that only men could be spiritually liberated. Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad, etc. Spiritual openings started happening in my life, but still I didn’t credit them, because after all, I’m a woman. Then I read a book edited by Jane Hirshfield called In Praise of the Sacred: 43 Centuries of Women’s Spiritual Poetry. The book is full the writings of women over the centuries who were deeply sourcing the truth within themselves, the truth that is genderless, ageless, and that all beings share. Reading that book enlivened my spiritual search and an awareness of what I really am, and what we all really are, has arisen. In gratitude to Jane Hirshfield, and to all the women in that book, who refused to be put off course by their religious and cultural training, I celebrate #ItWasNeverADress!
