In graduate school in psychology (many, many years ago) I created an “explicit gender stamp” which I stamped on all my term papers. It said that a coin toss would determine the gender of all the references to humans mentioned in the term paper (as in “the trainee psychologist will serve as a model to ___ patients”. I made them all female so that my male professors would learn to challenge their assumption that the average person is a male.
