Fibers

When I was in graduate school, pursuing my MFA, the university was looking for some departments to cut. One that they chose was the fibers department in the School of Art, a department of two remarkable women faculty with highly distinguished careers. It was, as many fibers departments are, a gathering place for those with feminist points of view; I wasn’t in the department, but participated in their classes as I found the dialogue helpful. There was a hearing in which graduate students were given time to share their opinion about the cuts; many of us showed up in support of the fibers department. I spoke of the excellence of the faculty and department as a whole; the panel asked why I though it was being cut. I said, “Sexism.” The department stayed and continues to flourish.
